Sochi 2014 Prepares for Safe and Secure Winter Games

Leading international policing experts visit Sochi to share invaluable major event experience

Sochi 2014 - Russia's first Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games - today welcomed a group of the world’s leading police officers as part of their commitment to hosting a Games underpinned by innovative and reliable security measures. The experienced specialists will enhance Sochi 2014's already well developed security preparation by sharing their experience of policing major sporting events.

Already one of the most secure places in Southern Europe, Sochi welcomes 4 million tourists a year, is home to a Residence for the President of the Russian Federation and stages a number of high profile international events. In recent years the city has successfully hosted the visit of US President, George W Bush, and staged the Russia-EU Summit.

Drawn from North America and eleven other European countries, including Greece, who hosted the last Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games, the international police experts will be taken on a tour of venue locations in the Krasnaya Polyana mountain range and given a briefing on the Olympic Plan by representatives of Sochi 2014. The party will also visit Sochi’s sea port, to discuss transport policing, customs and passport control measures with local authorities and immigration officials.

The delegation's visit - an example of Sochi 2014's commitment to staging a security programme to the highest international standards - will be hosted by Sochi's Vice Mayor, who has responsibility for city security, the Deputy Head of the surrounding Krasnodar Region and senior representatives of the Sochi City Police Force.

Dmitry Chernyshenko, President and CEO of Sochi 2014, said:

"Security is of the utmost importance to Sochi 2014 and our preparations are already well advanced. We are determined that Russia's first Winter Games will employ the most advanced and innovative security measures and learn from best practice from across the world. This visit of international policing experts with major events experience is one example of how we will ensure that Sochi 2014 is not only an inspirational Games, but also a safe Games."
